Role and Expectation Outline
TITLE: Assistant Coach National Team
REPORTS TO: Hampshire Swimming Committee
RENUMERATION: Out of pocket expenses during the weekend.
DURATION: Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October 2026
PURPOSE
The overall purpose of the Assistant Coach is to:
- Gain coaching experience of a Team event
- Enhance coaching experience to allow progression
- Provide professional coaching related services
- Take responsibility for an allocated group of swimmers for the duration of the competition
- Assist with the delivery and evaluation of the meet
- Communicate effectively with athletes, Head Team Coach, Team Managers and parents
- Deliver all duties in accordance with the programme objectives and briefings
- Motivate and enthuse swimmers and staff during the programme
- Reflect on your own coaching practice and behaviour
- Support the Team Managers where requested with the pastoral care of the athletes
- Exhibit British Swimming and Swim England Coaching Principles during coaching practice; Setting Direction, Staying Connected, Engaging People, Delivering Results and Credibility.
LOCATION : Ponds Forge Sheffield
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prior to programme delivery :
- Ensure you have a clear understanding of your role during the duration of the camp
- Communicate with the Assistant and other members of the camp staff
- Communicate with the home coach of the athletes allocated to your group to help to form an understanding of the athlete needs and expectations.
- Encourage athletes to prepare a Race Process Target sheet for their key race
During programme delivery
- Assist in the delivery of all competition activity in line with the team objectives
- Support an allocated group of athletes
- Make a positive contribution as required to support land based activities.
- Communicate effectively with all swimmers and staff
- Conduct effective pre-race planning with a focus on process targets
- Contribute to any post camp debrief discussion
- Feedback to swimmers’ home coaches on any key messages that have been delivered and that need reinforcing back in the home coaching programmes
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Must hold as a Swim England Level 2 Certificate or equivalent
- Must hold a valid Swim England DBS and safeguarding certificate
- Proven experience as a practising coach
- Committed to ongoing learning
- Has demonstrated engagement with the Swim England Pathway
- The ability to set priorities and work flexibly to meet outcomes required in a dynamic environment
- Good planning, interpersonal and communication skills (with swimmers, staff and home coaches)
- High levels of motivation and dedication
- Have an outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills and be able to enthuse and motivate young people
- A team player.
